What Killed Noida Techie Yuvraj Mehta: Water in Lungs, Then Cardiac Arrest

Noida, January 19, 2026:
The postmortem report of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who lost his life after his car plunged into a water-filled ditch in Noida, has revealed that he died due to drowning followed by cardiac arrest. The report found around 200 ml of fluid in his lungs, confirming that he suffocated under water before his heart stopped.

According to the medical findings, the cause of death has been recorded as “asphyxia due to antemortem drowning, followed by cardiac arrest.” Yuvraj was returning home late Friday night from his Gurugram office when the tragedy occurred amid dense fog and extremely poor visibility.

Accident in Dense Fog

Police said Yuvraj’s car fell into an unbarricaded, waterlogged ditch on a poorly lit stretch of road. The thick fog reportedly made it difficult for drivers to spot hazards ahead. Moments after the accident, Yuvraj managed to call his father, Rajkumar Mehta, seeking urgent help.

His father immediately alerted the police, following which police teams and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot.

Desperate Calls for Help

Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that Yuvraj had switched on his phone’s torch and was calling out for help from inside the ditch. Some locals alleged that rescue personnel hesitated to jump into the water due to the presence of iron rods and debris inside the ditch, raising serious questions about the speed and preparedness of the rescue operation.

However, police officials have denied these allegations.

Police Response

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rajeev Narayan Mishra said rescue efforts were carried out using all available equipment, including a crane, ladder, makeshift boat, and searchlights. He added that near-zero visibility due to dense fog significantly hampered the operation.

“The police and fire teams used multiple tools, but the fog made visibility extremely poor, complicating rescue efforts,” he said.

Civic Negligence Alleged

Local residents have alleged that the ditch had no barricading or warning signs, turning it into a deadly trap for motorists, especially during foggy conditions. Residents claimed they had previously complained about the danger posed by the open ditch.

Following public outrage, Noida authorities have begun corrective measures. The ditch is now being filled, and accountability action has been initiated.

Officials Face Action

In response to the incident, the local Junior Engineer has been terminated, while several other officials have been issued show-cause notices. Additional CEO of Noida Satish Pal Singh said the incident is under thorough investigation.

“The entire matter is being investigated, and strict action will be taken against those responsible. We are also reviewing earlier complaints made by residents,” Singh said.

He added that the ditch had become a “blind spot” that was unintentionally overlooked. “A special campaign has been launched by the CEO to identify and rectify such blind spots across Noida,” he said.

Case Registered Against Builders

Police have also registered a case against two real estate firms — MJ Wishtown Planner Limited and Lotus Green Construction Private Limited — in connection with the techie’s death, citing alleged negligence related to site safety and maintenance.

A Tragic Loss

Yuvraj Mehta’s death has sparked widespread anger and renewed debate over civic safety, infrastructure negligence, and accountability in rapidly growing urban areas. As investigations continue, the incident stands as a grim reminder of how unchecked hazards and poor visibility can turn routine commutes into fatal journeys.

The family continues to demand strict punishment for those responsible, hoping that no other family has to endure a similar loss.
